Adderall Medication Abuse

Adderall is a prescribed medication used commonly to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Adderall is a stimulant drug formed by a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.

Adderall has a high potential for drug misuse, mainly down to its ability to improve concentration and focus whilst making users more energetic. Students and office workers take the drug to help them study and focus for prolonged periods. For these reasons, Adderall has been labelled a “study drug” amongst students, along with Ritalin, another ADHD medication.

One high profile case of Adderall addiction was Lily Allen, who admitted to her abuse of the drug to the BBC

As Adderall is a Class B drug in the UK, it is difficult to obtain a prescription. GP’s are advised to refer all patients to specialist ADHD teams due to its growing misuse. The drug is only prescribed in a limited number of circumstances to those who need it with a low risk of misuse.

With the drug becoming more popular, users of Adderall look to the dark web and dealers for supply which can pose new public health implications. For dealers selling Adderall, it can be much cheaper for them to mix the drug with different ingredients or even other drugs, meaning the end-user could have unintended side effects initiating other health problems.
