August often feels different.
The office is quieter. Colleagues are away. Email traffic slows down. Social media fills with beach photos, family days out and people taking a well-earned break.
But while the world seems to pause, life’s challenges don’t.
For many people, summer can actually feel more overwhelming than any other time of year.
A change in routine can leave us feeling unsettled. Parents are balancing work with six weeks of school holidays. Teams are stretched as annual leave leaves fewer people carrying the same workload. Those living alone may feel the silence more acutely. And for others, summer serves as a painful reminder of someone who should still be here to enjoy it.
Grief doesn’t take annual leave.
Neither do stress, anxiety or loneliness.
There can be an unspoken expectation that summer is supposed to be enjoyable. That we should be making memories, relaxing or feeling refreshed.
When that’s not your reality, it can feel isolating.
You might convince yourself to keep going until September, when everyone is back and life returns to normal. You may not want to interrupt someone’s holiday or feel that your concerns aren’t important enough to mention.
But emotional wellbeing doesn’t work to the same calendar as annual leave.
If something is weighing on you today, it deserves attention today.
We often underestimate the power of simply being heard.
Not every conversation needs to end with advice or solutions. Sometimes what makes the biggest difference is knowing someone is there to listen without judgement.
That’s where Talk to a Peer can help.
Speaking to a trained peer supporter gives you the opportunity to talk openly about what’s on your mind in a safe, confidential and supportive space. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, navigating changes at home, coping with bereavement or simply feeling that things have become a bit too much, you don’t have to face it alone.
One conversation won’t change everything.
But it can change how you feel about carrying it.
At OdiliaClark, we know that everyone’s situation is different.
For some, a supportive conversation with a peer is exactly what’s needed. For others, it may be the first step towards accessing additional wellbeing support.
That’s why our Talk to a Peer service sits alongside a wider range of mental health and wellbeing services, helping individuals and organisations provide meaningful support whenever it’s needed.
Because support shouldn’t disappear just because it’s summer.
If you’re feeling the pressure of changing routines, covering for colleagues, missing someone special or simply finding this season more difficult than expected, know that you’re not alone.
And if you notice someone else seems quieter than usual, don’t underestimate the impact of asking a simple question:
“How are you, really?”
It could be the conversation that makes all the difference.
